Telling Stories
Lesson 5 of 7
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: say each letter name out loud. Then let your child write it in the dust or on paper.
Byiringiro draws a box on his paper.
On the lid of the box he puts a small cross.
That cross is a letter, and it is a new one.
Today you meet f, j and x.
Point to each letter and say its name:
f ... j ... x.
Say them two more times.
The letter f says /f/. Put your top teeth on your bottom lip and blow. /f/ /f/ /f/.
You hear /f/ at the beginning of father, food and football. You hear it in fish too.
The letter j says /j/. You hear it at the beginning of jug.
The letter x is not a Kinyarwanda letter. It is new for everybody.
x says /ks/. Most times it sits at the end of a word.
Say box slowly: b ... o ... ks. Say six slowly: s ... i ... ks.
f: one line down, with a hat bent over the top. Then one small line across the middle.
j: one line down with a tail under the line, and one dot on top.
x: one line this way, one line that way. They cross in the middle. Two lines, no more.
Careful! x is not one line up and one line across. Both lines are bent over, like a small cross on its side.
Write x ten times, and say /ks/ every time.

Watch how the pen makes each letter. Look for f, then j, then x. Write in the air with your hand.
Tip
x is the end of the box
Draw a box. Put x on the lid.
x says /ks/ and you hear it at the end: bo-ks, si-ks.
f blows on your lip. j has a tail and a dot.
Say each one out loud, then write it. Then tap Show answer to check.
