Telling Stories
Lesson 4 of 7
12 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: say every word here out loud. Rhyme is heard with the ears, not seen with the eyes.
Umutoni sings with her class.
She hears cat. Then she hears hat.
The two words end in the same little song.
Today you will find words that rhyme.
Say cat. Now say hat.
The beginnings are not the same. But the tails are the same: at.
Words with the same tail rhyme.
Say these out loud, two by two:
cat and hat and mat.
pen and hen.
sun and fun.
Every time, only the first little sound changes. The tail stays the same.
Say cat and cup.
They both start with the sound of the letter c. But they do not rhyme.
Rhyme is at the end of the word, not at the beginning.
Say both words out loud before you say yes. Your ears know.
Your Kinyarwanda words rhyme too! That is a good ear. Now look for an English one.

A rhyme song. Listen, then say the rhyming word out loud with the man.
Cat, hat, mat and more. All of them end the same way.
Tip
Listen to the tail
Say the two words out loud, one after the other.
Cut off the first little sound and keep the rest. If the rest sounds the same, they rhyme.
Same beginning is not a rhyme. Cat and cup do not rhyme.
