Telling Stories
Lesson 7 of 7
13 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: read the story frame out loud. Stop at every gap and let your child put in their own word.
Mutesi sits down next to her little brother.
"Once upon a time," she says, and then she stops.
She is making a story of her own. Nobody told it to her first.
Today you will make your own story too.
You know the story of the hen and the egg.
Do not say that story again. Keep its three parts and change three things:
Change the animal. Change the place. Change the thing that is not good.
Gatete has a goat, not a hen. His goat is in the garden, not in the house.
A story is not a list of what you did.
In the middle, something has to be not good. At the end, it is good again.
Say this out loud and put your own word in every gap.
Title: My ...
First. Once upon a time, I have a ... . It lives in my ... .
Then. One morning I cannot see my ... .
Next. I look under the ... . It is not there.
After that. I look behind the ... .
Finally. My ... can see it, next to the ... . Now I am fine.
Here is Habimana's story with his own words in the gaps:
Once upon a time, I have a dog. It lives in my garden. Then one morning I cannot see my dog. Next I look under the table. It is not there. After that I look behind the door. Finally my sister can see it, next to my bed. Now I am fine.

Akili speaks Kinyarwanda and English. This one is long, so sit with a big person and watch it all.
Tip
Same three parts, new animal
Keep the beginning, the middle and the end.
Then put in your own animal, your own place, and your own thing that is not good.
