Lesson 6 of 7
13 min
Let's begin
Grown-up: this is the last letter lesson of the year. Help your child write all 26 letters on one page of their own.
Niyonzima has a big paper on the table.
He writes letter after letter after letter.
Three letters are missing, and then his chart is full.
Today you meet q, p and l.
Point to each letter and say its name:
q ... p ... l.
Say them two more times.
The letter q is not a Kinyarwanda letter. It is new, like x.
q does not walk on its own. It takes u with it every time: qu.
Together they say /kw/. Say it: /kw/ /kw/ /kw/.
Careful! Do not write q on its own. First q, then u.
The letter p says /p/. Your two lips come together and pop.
You hear /p/ at the beginning of pig, plate, pen and play.
Look at p and b. The round part is on the same side!
But p hangs down under the line. b stands up on the line.
Say "p hangs down" while your hand writes it.
The letter l says /l/. Your tongue goes up behind your top teeth.
You hear /l/ at the beginning of leaves and lamp.
Write l: one straight line, from the top, straight down. No tail, no dot.
Now you have every letter of the year.
Sing the alphabet from your own chart. Point to each letter as you sing it.

Sing all the letters with Akili. Point to your own chart as you sing.
A short one. Say the name of every letter with the song.
